First they called it SPECIES IV, appropriately enough. That was changed to SPECIES: QUATTRO. Nombre muy Español. Tal vez demasiado Española (though the movie was filmed entirely in Mexico City)? The current title as they finish with post production is SPECIES: THE AWAKENING.
According to MGM's press, SPECIES: THE AWAKENING is specifically shot as a direct to video release specifically targeted at young adult males. This is Director Nick Lyon's fourth feature film and made on a budget of $4 million. Nick is used to making feature length films for about $100 grand so this is a big step up for him, as well as being his first Horror Thriller. SPECIES: THE AWAKENING was written by Ben Ripley (SPECIES III).
On his MySpace page, Musician and Composer Kevin M. Haskins (founding member of goth bands Bauhaus and Love & Rockets), claims credit for the film's score but imdb.com lists Paul Cristo (THE DEEP BELOW) as both composer and orchestrator.
We'll see how that works out.
Actor Helena Mattsson plays the Varmint, Miranda. Ben Cross (THE UNHOLY, PAPERHOUSE, DARK SHADOWS [TV], HELLFIRE, THE INVADER, EXORCIST: THE BEGINNING, WICKED LITTLE THINGS) plays the mad scientist who brought the horror all about. No particular Horror Thriller credits for the rest of the crew.
For the third sequel and fourth movie, MGM dispensed entirely with any remnants of the "Giger" look. SPECIES: THE AWAKENING will be released on the Scifi Channel then to DVD. A new deluxe 4 disc SPECIES box set is also in the works with a possible 5th disc of extras.
